Technically is is possible?: sure
Is there anything wrong with doing it?: Not if it makes you happy

Would we want to do it?: Not a chance.
Will the normal wisdom and collective knowledge of looping be useful?: Some yes, some no.

At 12', I'm assuming you will have camping gear, outboard and oars.
 - With just a little planning you can probably camp most nights when there are no hotels in the area keeping cost down. With a little advance planning getting to a hotel should be doable frequently. Even if you can't keep the courtesy car over night, if you make friends with other boaters, I bet you could talk them into borrowing the car to drop you off and pick you up in the morning.
 - Assuming a cruise speed of 20-25mph, covering 100-150 miles per day very doable for much of the loop (locks will still slow you down). This is much better than the typical looper and should be able to get you by many isolated areas where there would be no hotels.
 - There is a simple solution to range on the mississippi. Sit back and enjoy a little huckfin adventure. With a current of 3-6mph, you can just drift, using the oars to stay clear of the barge traffic. 3 or 4 days camping on the banks at night and you are to the ohio river with almost full fuel tanks for the short run up river. Also, you can probably get away with beaching the boat in areas a big trawler would have no access.

If you are looking for a relaxing time, I think you will be disappointed. If the idea of camping out and figuring out the logistics appearls, it should be a great trip.
