[Ontbirds]Niagara River - No Cave Swallows

A few people were out looking today, including Betsy and me.  We had four
Rough-winged Swallows off of the east end (upstream end) of Goat Island, NY
around 9:30 a.m.  Later in the early afternoon, we saw probably the same
four in the same location, while looking from just below the control gates
on the Ontario side.  There was another Rough-winged Swallow out from the
Engineerium, which is about 1/4 mile above the falls on the Ontario side.
Nobody we talked to had seen any Cave Swallows (before around noon).

There are large numbers of Bonaparte's Gulls on the river now.  I estimated
5-10,000 around the falls, another 5000 around the power plants, and 5000
more further downriver in Lewiston-Queenston.  The only thing we could find
with them were LITTLE GULLS.  We had three adults above the falls and three
adults plus one second-basic from the boat ramp in Queenston (looking
downriver).

Large gulls are still relatively few in number.  However, we had four LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULLS early in the morning next to Goat Island, NY plus three
more out in the mid-river area above the falls.  The only other gull of note
was an adult ICELAND GULL seen from the Adam Beck overlook at the power
plants on the Ontario side.  There were VERY few large gulls at the power
plants though that can change quickly.

Good birding!
