Visitors:
A big thanks to Chris B. and Ronnie G for doing today's count... pretty
good flight indeed!
Weather:
Temps ranged from 9C-13C. Winds remained roughly WNW for most of the day,
shifting to nearly W at the end, varying in strength from around 20 to 35
km/h. Cloud cover ranged from at 50% to 100%. There were a couple of brief
sprinkles.
Raptor Observations:
Well, itâs OCTOBER, so the Turkey Vultures are moving, along with a nice
variety of other stuff, including a young female Peregrine carrying brunch
at 840am and an adult male at 139pm. There was also a lone Osprey in early
morning, a sprinkling of Broad-winged Hawks mid-day, and a few
Red-shouldered Hawks as well. 1671 individuals in all: a good day!
Non-raptor Observations:
Non-raptors included: Canada Goose, Herring Gull, American Crow, Blue Jay,
American Goldfinch, Northern Flicker, Mourning Dove, European Starling,
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Black-capped Chickadee,
Common Loon, Killdeer, White-throated Sparrow, Nashville Warbler,
Black-throated Green Warbler, Eastern Phoebe, Carolina Wren, European
Starling, American Pipit, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Great Blue Heron,
Double-crested Cormorant, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Gray Catbird, Purple
Finch, Pine Siskin, American Robin, Northern Flicker, Hairy Woodpecker,
Pileated Woodpecker, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Red-winged Blackbird, and
Common Nighthawk.
Predictions:
Saturday morning could see a continuation of the flight if the winds stay
NW as forecast BUT then they're supposed to swing all the way around to
SE... our worst wind direction. Sunday looks to be a washout at this point.
