Erie Canal

Things got real rough on the Erie again.  It could have been much much
worse, but this time Canal Corp lifted some of the folding dams out of the
water nice and early:

That's what it looks like, this photo I took a few years ago at Lock E-11.
The dam gets lifted completely out of the water and the river can then run
as fast as she pleases.  Doing this has stopped the flooding of towns this
time, but it will cause boats stuck in the area to be grounded in the
aftermath.  Boats on the Waterford Flight are completely unaffected.

My personal guess is that the Erie may stay closed for a few weeks, until
they can recover and refill the water.  This is not the Canal Corp's
opinion, I don't know what their plans are right now ... but I've been thru
several of these before.  They do seem to be managing it rather well,
considering the amount of water they had to deal with.

For those heading north to the canals, I would suggest you dawdle a bit and
plan on getting here in about 2 weeks.

For those planning on going up the Champlain Canal, I expect it will be
open in just a few days.  From my dock near Lock C7 and north, it never did
close and all is fine up here.  The Fort Edward Yacht Basin is under
water.

Anyone heading south from Lake Champlain, can still get as far as my dock,
and you are all welcome to stay with me.  I can dock at least 4 boats and
then there is the floating dock just south of me which can take maybe 6
more, so keep 'em coming.  Bring red wine, there are rumors of pirates in
the area.

The pier at Waterford is underwater, but the Lock 3 Yacht Club is again
populated and they are all safe for the duration.

If you need more specific info, feel free to contact me.
