Thanks to assistance from R. K. Headland of Scott Polar Research
Institute at Cambridge, I can confirm the following:

-- Idlewild was the 103rd vessel, the 23rd yacht and the fourth
powerboat to transit the Northwest Passage.

-- The other three transits by motor yacht were Mabel E. Holland, a
converted lifeboat, in 1986-89  Itasca, a converted ocean tug, in
1994, and Polar Bound, a purpose-built trawler, in 2003-04. Mabel E.
Holland and Polar Bound had the same master, David Scott Cowper.

-- The historic first transit in 1903-06 was by Roald Amundsen who
was forced to winter thrice aboard Gjoa.

-- One power catamaran has made the passage: Nadon, an RMCP patrol
vessel, went through in 2000 with an escort vessel to commemorate the
transit in both directions by the RCMP patrol vessel St. Roch in the
1940s.

There was also the transit by former US Secretary of the Treasury Simon in
his very large yacht (which appears in brokerage from time to time.) He
ferried guests to his yacht via his helicopter which also did ice
reconaissance. Maybe his vessel too closely approximated a ship?
