Although there have been improvements in the layout of the Nordhavn motor
sailer--there is one thing which really puzzles me--and that is the galley
down next, a long way from any table where one can sit down and eat. (Yes
sailors eat). Then there is this huge storage well on the foredeck. (OH--it's
susposed to be a cockpit for down wind sailing--OK where is the shaded). Oh
yes--good sea berths?
I suspect that the range under power is optimistic (as Nordhavn has often
been) and that although the sail area is not given, the boat will be under
canvased. A true motor sailor will both power and sail equally well.
Unfortunately too many do neither well. With the size of engine in this boat
the fuel consumption will be many times what we experienced in a slightly
narrower beam similar sized boat driven by 85 hp with what would appear to be
twice the sail area.
As for the anecdote about sail boats powering to the South Pacific--sounds
great to a power boater, but the reality is that the majority of cruising
sailboats don't have anywhere the range to do that--and they most likely
sailed.
But--this is passage under power--and motor sailors do power.
