January 10 - February 15, 2021

The works presented through the Helen S. Smith Gallery websitehttps://www.greenriver.edu/community/art-gallery/ at Green River College are a culmination of works gathered by the Cave Gallery in Vancouver, WA during the spring and summer of 2020.  These works represent a wide variety of artists in various stages of creative growth - children to emerging professionals and established artists.

The Cave Gallery closed its doors to the public that spring. They invited select artists to make and present works of art that responded to the first weeks of quarantine when Covid 19 initially struck the Northwest.  This work was hung in the windows of the gallery space and only viewable from the street. The Columbian reviewed the exhibition,https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.columbian.com%2Fnews%2F2020%2Fjun%2F11%2Fvancouvers-art-at-the-cave-explores-art-of-the-quarantine%2F&data=04%7C01%7Csdillon%40greenriver.edu%7C61afa9d4739142dfce5108d8b652c02c%7Cfa40663e972749789bce776cf824bca5%7C0%7C0%7C637459813816580301%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=WbsFpAS%2F16uVgtlGocj1Um5FEsIvs9KIbHvyT5QGWhk%3D&reserved=0 highlighting the gallery to demonstrate the resiliency of art in a crisis.

During the summer of 2020, as the pandemic continued, the gallery reopened to in-person visitors.  Artwalk in Vancouver was effectively cancelled, as were any receptions or artist talks that normally happen in a professional gallery setting.  The Cave extended its call for art to the greater community and curated an exhibition of works bringing together shared experiences highlighting creativity and cultural resiliency.

Helen S. Smith Gallery partnered with The Cave to continue the conversation by extending and building on the exhibition as a way to support artists, build community, dive into a bigger academic conversation about the role of art and to support the Cave Gallery's mission during these trying times. You too are invited to participate by submitting work to Green River's exhibition this spring!

CALL FOR ART

Art of the Quarantine will function as a prompt for a bigger community conversation and response as it moves to Green River College.  That’s where you come in!  Helen S. Smith Gallery partnered with Art at the Cave to continue the conversation by extending and building on the exhibition as a way to support artists, build community and dive into a bigger academic conversation about the role of art during the pandemic.  It is often said that “art reflects life.”  During this unprecedented time, art for many is a way to address psychological and emotional undertones without words.  Art is a therapeutic coping mechanism, it is self-expression in isolation, it brings us together as a shared experience, and for many, a cultural necessity as we move toward recovery.  We are calling for art made in response to this prompt to be presented on the gallery website between February 15 and May 1.

To submit work, please follow the submission guidelines as posted on the Helen S. Smith Gallery Website.https://www.greenriver.edu/community/art-gallery/call-for-artists/

Art of the Quarantine continues as a rolling exhibition into the spring accompanied by artist talks and discussions.  All works submitted by artists working in the Northwest will be featured virtually on the Helen S. Smith Gallery website until April, 2021.  One artist will be selected for a solo exhibition physically in the Gallery in 2023.

The Helen S. Smith Gallery on Green River College’s main campus was named in honor of the college Foundation’s first President. In addition to being one of the college’s founding members, she was known as a strong advocate for the arts in the community.  Now 50 years and counting, the gallery continues to carry on her legacy by presenting compelling and innovative exhibitions featuring emerging and established Northwest Artists throughout the year.  The gallery also highlights works by Green River student artists twice annually.
