Hardly consider myself an authority on Jellyfish in the Chesapeake, I DID spend 3 summers docked at Harborview in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. It was only my last summer there that I ever had any trouble at all with those nasty creatures, though every once in awhile I did see larger ones, it was that last summer when I started seeing solid droves of them and their nearly invisible babies! IT was those minute little suckers which were the problem as they seemed able to come through any screen on my AC intake. At least the filter on the Nordhavn was easy to get to and clean; not so on the Linssen though I only kept her docked there briefly. Later HER problem came in Punta Gorda my last year there, when they had a barnacle attack never seen before and I ended up some months after I left having to replace one AC unit, even though I was having more than normal bottom cleaning done and Mark Richter did a thorough acid clean on that AC intake before we left the area for good.
Basically spending my summers in the Inner Harbor was great fun, that had to be about the most filthy water I’ve been in. I’m sure that contributed to the problem, though I’m not an expert on the eating habits of jelly fish, that must have contributed to the problem.
Two years ago I joined my family for a week in Destin FL, some of the most beautiful beaches ever. I am just 2 hrs from there so our TV and paper (back when we HAD a paper!) were full of warning about the jellyfish ‘attack’ on local beaches…this was in August when the water temperature is probably the highest. BUT those swarms of jelly fish seemed to move on, not linger off one area for long.
If I were to spend time there now, I would investigate looking for screens for all the intakes which would be fine enough to handle the problem as well as monitor the filter systems and clean daily or more as needed. I’m VERY allergic to jelly fish stings!
