Hello Gators,Week 1 of the Gator Fitness Challenge is complete! If you have not yet joined, you can start this week! Saturday morning's workout is again geared to getting everything in for the week within a couple of hours. This week's topics include...Accomplishments... One athlete raced... One podium finish!Who's Next?... Lots of us are back in action this week!About A Gator... Fast feet!TRIvia: Fantasy football? Been there. Fantasy baseball? Done that. Fantasy triathlon? Hmm... Sounds interesting!Weekly Workouts: Includes an opportunity TONIGHT for a preview of the Spring-Valley YMCA "Fall 5" 5K course!Happy Birthday! to Ruth Subach who is celebrating (perhaps still in Africa?) this Friday! Best wishes, Ruth!
Thanks! to Mindy Mattarazzo for volunteering to assist with maintaining the Tri Club information on the Y indoor pool area bulletin board!
Accomplishments: Light but successful weekend...Souderton Five Miler (Souderton, PA): Dave Gale placed second in his age group in this local running race... PODIUM! Great job, Dave!Who's Next?: Our Y's 5K and kids' 400 yard dash highlights this weekend. Plus we have our first marathoners of the fall season and our first "Far East" Gator. Best wishes for safe and fun races for all!Saturday, October 11: No one racing that I'm aware of, but the IRONMAN World Championships take place in Kona, Hawaii starting around 12:30pm our time. You can tune in on-line for live race coverage and/or wait for the NBC highlights show on November 15. There is always an amazing pro field as well as lots of very inspirational stories from the age groupers participating in the race.Sunday, October 12:Chicago Marathon: Both Tiff Pfluger and Tim Pfluger will be running in this event, one of the most iconic marathons in the world.Steamtown Marathon (Scranton, PA): Heather Tracey will be participating in this race up north.Nanjing Triathlon (Nanjing, China): Bob Lanyon had a taste of exotic racing earlier this year when his son competed in an IRONMAN race in Australia. Well, this weekend Bob jumps in himself by participating in this event which includes the following venues... swim in Purple Cloud Lake, cycle around the Zhongshan Scenic Area ending at the Nanjing East Suning Galaxy, and run in the Xuzhuang Software Park... I recommend not challenging Bob to a game of Scrabble when he gets back!Rev3 South Carolina (Anderson, SC): Andy Rosebrook participates in this Rev3 event, which will perhaps be a Challenge event next year after the acquisition of Rev3 by Challenge.Cape Henlopen Triathlon and Duathlon (Lewes, DE): Taking on one of Piranha's final events of the season are Kelly Beauchamp, Ken Beauchamp, Don Schlichtmann, and Jake Schlichtmann.Spring-Valley YMCA "Fall 5" 5K (Royersford, PA): Competitors that I'm aware of (I'm sure there are others) in our "home" 5K include... Dave Gale, Vince Bellino, Trevor Bellino, Lucy Bellino (and probably some additional Bellinos), Gregg Heimer, Dean Milligan, Riley Milligan, Kim Milligan, Tony Angelaccio, and Don Mack. And participating in the kids 400 yard dash... Joey Moffa, Sarah Moffa, and Nicholas Moffa.About A Gator: This week's edition is about one of our athletes who seems to have the run down pretty well and is also making outstanding progress in his swimming and cycling... seems like a great combination for a triathlete. Learn about Tim Pfluger as he completes his taper for this weekend's Chicago Marathon!TRIvia: This week's contest involves the not very popular world of "Fantasy Triathlon" and is mainly aimed at the ultra tri geeks such as myself and this week's "About A Gator" subject. We'll get back to a more normal question next week. This week's question: For this week's TRIvia, you can participate in a global contest to guess the top 10 male and female finishers at this weekend's IRONMAN World Championships. The website to participate in this is called IM-Predictions.com and can be found at http://im-predictions.com/. Last TRIvia answer:Question: What is a good average cadence to shoot for in biking and running (hint: it's the same number for both)? Answers within +/- 10 will be considered to be correct.Answer: The answer is 90. What this means is that you should typically aim for about 90 full revolutions of your bike pedal or 180 steps every minute when running. Being within a range of about 85-95 is totally fine. If you do not have a cadence sensor on your bike, you can simply count for a 15 second period (should be about 22-24) to get your cadence. And this also gives you something to do if you have a long run and need to occupy your mind with something. There were no correct responses so no changes to the TRIvia standings.TRIvia Leader: Bob Lanyon remains in the lead by a slim 1 point.Weekly Workouts: Remaining workouts for this week include...Tuesday, 10/7:6pm-6:30pm: Spring-Valley YMCA "Fall 5" 5K course preview group run at Spring-Ford High School (meet near the tennis courts; run to begin promptly at 6pm due to early darkness).8:30pm-9:30pm: YogaWednesday, 10/8, 10am-11am and 8:30pm-9:30pm: Tri Swim classesThursday, 10/9, 8pm-9:30pm: Bike trainers on the Y indoor pool deckSaturday, 10/11: Taking place at the Y...7:10am-7:30am: Swim7:30am-9:00am: Bike trainers on the Y indoor pool deck9:10am-9:30am (optional; can be skipped by anyone running in Sunday's 5K): Aerobic run (Y indoor track or treadmill or Y outdoor track if it's not raining... your choice)9:30am-9:35am: Check off your week 2 box on the Gator Fitness Challenge tracking spreadsheet posted on the Y pool deck bulletin board
