I have 2-3 lingering juvenile or female hummingbirds. In past years I have
hung plants out which an occasional hummingbird will feed at when heading
south. This year I put out a hummingbird sugar water feeder. It has been
used heavily in recent weeks. In addition I have vermillionaire plants
which they feed at.
Til what approximate date does one leave out the sugar water feeders?
Will this deter them from migrating? (I know this question was asked in
past years, but I couldn't find any reference to it).
Thank you,

Hi, Bev!
The hummers will move along on their own schedule, based on the decreasing daylight. So they will inevitably leave. It's good to have extra "juice" for any stragglers - if they're running late, they'll need it!
We don't do feeders at our house, but we do plant for hummers. There are also native, wild plants - like jewel weed - that hummers love, and it blooms well into the fall. Nature certainly doesn't "self-weed" to encourage birds to migrate. By the same logic, all the rodents would have to go into hiding to encourage birds of prey to migrate.

My "late date" on Hummers is October 5th but I leave the feeders up for
another 10 days or so in case of stragglers.
