Bad news from the Bering

Hey listees,

More bad news out of the Bering.  The snow crab fishery opened this last
weekend and in a scene that has become all too familiar, one crab boat has
been lost in 50+ kts winds and 25 foot seas and another has lost a crew
member overboard.  Another report had winds at 35 kts and 15 foot seas, not
altogether unusual for the Bering this time of year.

I was actually heartened by other news out this weekend (seemingly released
prior to the news about the new accidents) that the feds are considering
changing the fishery from a fierce derby to placing a quota on each vessel
in an effort to relieve some of the pressure that may lead to accidents.

We shall see.
