Dear Larry G,
I was impressed with the smaller Excite cat (810) from the moment I
first saw a drawing of it, about 5 or 6 years ago. In fact, I even
thought about importing/repping the boat via my catamaran company.
A couple of other cat dealers (New England and Texas) I knew at that
time happened to just beat me to the punch. Not too long thereafter I
was glad for that -- as the U.S. dollar weakened, the wholesale price
rose quite steeply, making the U.S. list price very high. Given the
rebound of the U.S. dollar over just the past couple of months, new,
Euro-priced boats are once again becoming more appealingly priced.
As to the smaller EXCITE 810 -- it was my observation that you get quite
a bit of boat for the size . . . although, there IS a feeling of
"slightly-cramped" as you move about most areas of the 810 model. It's
sort of like the mixed blessing of receiving 5 pounds of sausage in a
4-pound casing. Then again, I don't know of a power cat that size
(around 27' or 28', if I recall correctly), that does NOT give me that
cramped sensation. (I'm 5'10, and 200 lbs.)
The one thing you should ascertain for yourself is the motion. In some
conditions the boat (or at least this was true for the smaller model
that I sea-trialed), can develop a strong "porpoising" motion when at
speed. Seeming to begin diving into the seas, then gradually pulling up
-- then beginning to dive in again, then gradually pulling back up. It
was uncomfortable (not to mention disconcerting). I don't know if the
boat I was aboard was badly trimmed....needed hydraulic transom
tabs...or just is a not-quite-rightly designed hull(s).
I haven't seen the larger model. But the drawing had me optimistic that
those few extra feet would address the "cramped" feeling. However, when
I saw its price (this was about 3 or 4 years ago), it was so high that I
doubted anyone could make many (if any) sales in the U.S. And, in fact,
it's my understanding that few of the 810s (and fewer of the 1010s) were
ever imported into the U.S. So, that means there probably aren't many
here, which would affect (lower) the resale value. On the other hand, if
you're looking at one that's already been lowered in price from back
then in order to TRY to resell it, it might be worth considering. But
again, do check as to whether its ride-characteristic is too off-putting
for you.

Soon, my Admiral and I will be back in Miami, hopefully in a canal residence
as we were back in 2004-2007. A recent shock had us looking at a contract for
the same residence we had before, but with only a 30 ft. dock on the canal,
with a set of davits. Last time, I kept our 24 ft. Express Cruiser there, and
with a swim platform, it was about all the boat length the dock could handle.
This sent me scrambling for alternatives on smaller cats, one of which was the
27 ft. Excite Cat 810. Sure looks good on the video, but does anyone have any
experience with this Spanish built boat. If it's worthwhile, I might take a
trip down there before we move fro Berlin. Thanks in advance for any
feedback.
