Subject: [Cityattorneys] Policies regarding tansgender arrestees

During our civil rights defense workgroup call yesterday the issue of what policies exist regarding how to treat transgender arrestees came up.  Without delving into much detail, the issue arises when a person who is tansgender but who has not completely gone through the process is arrested.  How do the police and correctional officers deal with that person?  In the person's proposed new gender, in the person's birth gender? At what stage of the person's transformation do the officers recognize the person's new gender?  Do the officers simply use gender self designation?  Obviously, this is a very difficult issue and one that we should discuss as a group through CLE and in terms of policy setting. You may respond to the group or directly to me, but because I am sending this to several lists, you may get some bounce notifications if you respond to a list you are not on.  Don't worry, I will try to pass your message along if it contains a substantive response (i.e.; is not a me too or similar response).  Chuck
