OK Bob thanks for that interesting observation. Were you able to actually plot your close-hauled COG vs true wind angle before and after joining the boards?  Perhaps the 50% reduction in drag using the asymmetric foil Malcolm mentioned represents such a small percentage of the total upwind drag that it's just not significant...
