Hi John: I am one of those hooked on paper charts, etc. The Canadian
government who have supported the going to electronics have just recently issued an
amendment to that by saying all vessels plying the Great Lakes and major
harbours must have paper backup for the foreseeable future unless the shipping
line can prove their redundancy systems have basically a fail safe tolerance.
This may be a way out of paper for commercial but no pleasure craft I know of
would have the required redundancy systems. When we cruised on the QE2 in 2002
(World Cruise), I had an apportunity to visit the bridge. There were 4 24"
LCD's chartplotters but right next to that was a table with the paper chart
for that area. Regards. Leonard Stern, Indifference.
