GATORS DIY TRI DETAILS and POLL...

Below are the details for our Sunday, September 13 "Gators DIY Tri".
Please read fully and then, if you plan to participate as an athlete or in
a support role, please select one of the survey options (and include the
requested comment if it applies to your choice); we'd like to have your
input by end of day Sunday, August 23.  Also, if you have questions, please
post them as comments.

• Format: 3 distances... Sprint, Olympic, Half

◦ Swim: One loop (i.e. start and finish at the same spot) of the Blue Marsh
swim area when hugging the outer buoys is about 700-800 yards, so slightly
less than a half mile.

• Sprint: 1 loop (approx 0.4 mi)

• Olympic: 2 loops (approx 0.85 mi)

• Half: 3 loops (approx 1.25 mi)

◦ Bike: The standard Cujo Loop is 17.5 miles.  The "Cujo Loop with the
Crosby Extension" is about 20 miles.

• Sprint: 1 Cujo Loop (17.5 mi)

• Olympic: 2 Cujo Loops (25 mi; one Cujo Loop with Crosby extension plus a
5 mile out and back [2.5 miles each way])

• Half: 3 Cujo Loops including one with the Crosby Extension (55 miles;
might add a "parking lot out and back" mile to get to 56 miles)

◦ Run: Course TBD, but using a trail off of the beach parking lot and/or
Palisades Dr.

• Sprint: 5K

• Olympic: 10K

• Half: 13.1 mi

• Why are we doing it?  As a motivator to keep working, since there are
very few actual events on the calendar, and as a reward for all of the
training completed to date.

• What COVID-19 precautions will we take?  We'll definitely stress social
distancing and require masks before/after the event and for any supporters
when social distancing is not possible.  We'll also ask athletes to not
gather into groups before/after the event.

• When does it start/end?  Everyone will start between 8:30am-10am;
athletes can select their own start times and we will stagger them a bit if
we have many that select the same time.  All athletes, regardless of start
time, must be finished by no later than 4pm.

• Can athletes do it with a partner or two?  Sure... This definitely has
some safety benefits, particularly on the bike course.

• Will time be kept?  We do plan to have an official start and finish time
for each athlete, but we will not keep track of timing for each individual
leg... The DIY nature of this event means it's up to the athletes to keep
their own time.

• Will there be any aid provided (i.e. hydration, gels, etc)?  Not planned
at this time (as this is a DIY event), but could add something simple (i.e.
cooler in the parking lot).

• Where is the transition area?  Each athlete's vehicle in the beach
parking lot will serve as their transition area.  We will try to select a
parking lot location away from any regular park traffic so that we can keep
our vehicles close together and have a non-racer monitor them.

• Will there be a winner?  From the standpoint of placement and someone
winning with the fastest time, no, we will not be keeping places or giving
out awards, but everyone that participates wins by getting to complete an
outdoor triathlon in this non-event year.

• Will there be medals?  Not planned at this time, but might be added.

• Will there be any practice sessions?  Yes, Sunday, August 31 and
Saturday, September 5.  Each will start around 8:30am with a swim session
followed by a Cujo bike loop and end with a short run on part of the run
course.

• Can athletes do it as a relay?  Sure

• Can athletes do just 1 or 2 legs?  Sure

• Will there be a duathlon option (i.e. run/bike/run)?  Not currently
planned, but could easily be added... Likely would replace the Olympic and
Half swims with the 5K Sprint run and perhaps a shorter run for a Sprint
duathlon.
