FOR FOLKS WHO HAVE IT ALL, A SKY LOUNGE ON THEIR TRAWLER

By the Editors

No matter how we calculate the amount of money in
the bank relative to the amount of money one can
spend on recreation, you will need a net worth of
perhaps $10 million in order to be able to
acquire the latest offering in high-end trawler
yachts from Northern Marine.

The Northern Marine 9800 Expedition Yacht will be
the new flagship of the Anacortes, Washington,
builder. Hull #1 has been sold and is under
construction for launch in early 2006.

The yacht looks sleek, despite being 95 feet on
deck. A distinctive touch comes from the sky
lounge with an aft-facing, wraparound window that
is on the same level but separated from the
pilothouse.

The latest model was conceived in house at
Northern Marine, with a staff of naval architects
led by Stuart Archer and drafting personnel
handling all design work.

Two weeks ago, Northern Marine launched
Timberwolf, the second vessel in the Northern
Marine 5700 series that made its debut with Raven
last fall. Hulls #3 and #4 are under
construction. Northern Marine's smallest offering
is 55 feet on deck.

In other developments, Richard "Bud" LeMieux,
president, and George Huston, chief executive
officer, the two principals of Northern Marine,
have joined with Rusty Preston, formerly chairman
of Westport Shipyard, to form a new corporate
entity called Northern Motor Yachts of which
Northern Marine becomes a subsidiary.

Corporate headquarters and production facilities
remain in Anacortes, Washington. Preston will be
responsible for sales and marketing from a new
office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

GRAND BANKS FLEET TO HEAD FOR EUROPE IN 2005

Grand Banks is organizing a trans-Atlantic
adventure for its owners, but it won't be quite
as challenging as the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally.

In August 2005, about 25 Grand Banks will be
shipped from Florida to England where their
owners will begin a month-long European cruise in
company.

Owners will meet their boats in England to start
the cruise by participating in a United Kingdom
GB owners' rendezvous. From there, the fleet will
proceed along the English coast to Falmouth,
cross the English Channel, arriving in Brest in
Brittany. The cruise will then take in the
northern coast of Brittany to Normandy, stopping
in several ports of call, including St. Malo,
Jersey and Guernsey. The fleet will follow the
northern coast of France into Belgium, taking the
River Schelde to Antwerp, then rivers and canals
to Amsterdam.  The organized portion of the trip
will likely conclude with the Dutch Amicale
Rendezvous in the last week of August.

Grand Banks has not determined exact numbers yet,
but it will likely be around 25 vessels from the
U.S. To start the application process, e-mail
europetrip@grandbanks.com your name, e-mail
address, and particulars about your Grand Banks.

NORDHAVN RALLY OPEN TO ADDITIONAL ENTRIES

Those who have been to sea on long ocean voyages
will tell you that the most difficult part of
passagemaking is leaving the dock. All kinds of
factors can conspire to prevent getting under
way, as entries in this summer's Nordhavn
Atlantic Rally are discovering.

Half a dozen entries have dropped out, opening
the door for additional, qualified vessels to
participate in the historic event. To qualify,
all vessels must have a range of 2,500 nautical
miles or more and must pass a survey certifying
they are in seaworthy condition and up to the
task of a serious, offshore passage. Makes other
than Nordhavns are as welcome as Nordhavns.

As many as 30 trawler yachts are scheduled to
depart May 17-18 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida,
for Bermuda, then head for Azores on the second
and long leg, before completing the rally in
Gibraltar in late June, some 3,800 nautical miles
later.

For entry information, telephone PAE at 949-496-4848.

READERS WRITE: AMPHIBUS CIRCUMNAVIGATION

Our report in Trawler News #114 on the plans of
Mark Roehrig to circumnavigate the world in an
amphibious bus generated a mailbox full of
e-mail. Here's a sampling:

My first reaction is: "We'll see!" Others have
tried this king of thing, usually with
pretty poor results. Remember the converted milk
tanker amphib? At least he was starting with a
stainless steel "hull."
--Henry Clews

The amphibus is a FIASCO in the making. PLEASE
attempt to reason with the (snip) individual
before the SEA claims him for its own!

CRISIS ON THE ATLANTIC ICW

Claiborne Young, a leading author of cruising
guides on the U.S. east coast, has issued a
warning about the state of the Atlantic
Intracoastal Waterway and the prospect for no
further funding for maintenance.

"I'm very sorry to report that the Atlantic ICW
crisis is growing worse . . . in addition to the
3-foot depths at Lockwood's Folly, I'm hearing
that there are problems with the Waterway at its
passage behind Carolina Beach Inlet, and at its
intersection with New River, both of which are on
the North Carolina coastline, south of Morehead
City and Swansborough," Young wrote in an e-mail
to the cruising community.

Reportedly, the Army Corps of Engineers and the
Coast Guard are close to removing navigation
buoys in those areas. To look up survey data and
centerline waypoints through the bad areas, go

http://www.saw.usace.army.mil/nav/nav.htm

Lack of funding for the ICW in the federal budget
for 2005 has spurred the Atlantic Intracoastal
Waterway Association into action with this
missive to David Hobson, chairman of the
appropriations committee for energy and water
development, U.S. House of Representatives:

"The President's FY 05 budget did not authorize
any funds to maintain the Atlantic Intracoastal
Waterway (AIWW).  This waterway runs through five
southern states and is critical to the nation and
the local economies in Virginia, North Carolina,
South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

"The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has declared
the AIWW a "low use" waterway using flawed
methodologies.  The number of ton miles traveled
is the criteria used to determine whether or not
a waterway is to be funded.  Commercial use such
as construction vessels, commercial fishing boats
and cruise ships are not even considered when
deciding the fate of the AIWW.  Recreational
boaters don't even count! The AIWW has been
closed in North Carolina at Lockwood's Folly
Inlet since early December and the Corps lacks
the funds to reopen it.

"The AIWW is closing and nobody seems to care!
You can save the AIWW and ensure that our
children will enjoy its beauty and benefits in
the years to come.  Please allocate the needed
funds to the Corps of Engineers FY05 budget.

The plea to politicians was prepared by Rosemary
Lynch, executive director of the association.
More information on the campaign can be found at

http://www.atlintracoastal.org

In his newsletter, Claiborne Young called on the cruising community:

"The entire cruising community, diverse as we all
are, need to come together on this issue NOW. If
funding can't be found in Washington right away,
we are ALL facing a situation in which our
on-the-water experience will be changed for the
rest of our lives. If we don't have a reliable
Intracoastal Waterway, whether it be from Norfolk
to Miami, or from the Caloosahatchee River to
Anclote Key, or from Carrabelle, Florida, to New
Orleans, then pleasure boating in the
Southeastern U.S. will never be the same again.

"Please write, call, and/or e-mail your
congressman and senators. I suggest we make a
real nuisance of ourselves!"

about the crisis on the ICW via
