Hello,

Please forward this flyer for the upcoming symposium  hosted by the NW
EcoBuilding Guild to anyone who might be interested.  The registration fee
is waved to landlords, property managers and renters or anyone else who
would like to help out by volunteering as a note-taker during the world
cafe session or  would like to stay and help with breakdown. This is an
important discussion topic not only because it touches on greenhouse gas
reductions, natural resource conservation and public health it is also a
social equity issue. Over 30% of our regions housing stock are rental
homes, this number is expected to rise significantly over the next decade
or two. The average rental home is 38 years old, and a high percentage of
renters lie within the elderly, young and lower income demographics. This
combined with the statistic that energy prices are rising at a steeper rate
than the cost of housing illustrates the need for conversation  and action
on the issue.

More people are renting their homes than ever, and looking for homes that
are affordable, energy efficient and healthy.  This is a challenge for
landlords if they want to invest in energy efficiency, but find it
difficult since energy savings accrue to the renter, not the investor.

To tackle this "split incentive" problem, a team of local stakeholders has
come together to propose a market-based solution with incentives for
landlords to make healthy, energy efficient homes more affordable for more
people.  Come hear our strategy for improving return on investment - from
a "triple bottom line" sustainability perspective.

Join in a strategic conversation with landlords and renters, construction
and energy experts, local utilities as well as housing advocates and public
health officials, to help refine and implement this vision.
