Good information!  The more I learn about operating smaller twin diesels, the
more I tend to investigation of the possibility.  I had shyed away initially
because I had been told that fuel burn of 6-8gph were the norm on them.
However, I am getting a lot different picture from owners here on the list.
Gotta love this TWL for helping one cut through the clutter?  I can live with
3-4gph and should have known better.  After all I forgot that I used to push
my 48 LRC at 8 kts on about 6gph via the twin 100hp Detroits.  Actually the
6-8 gph figure came from a boat with twin 225's.  I used to get about 10 kts
out of my twin Cat 375's, but could never get the gph below about 10.

We have a 42 footer in FL.  300K loss cost 4k. We have dropped everything
except liability @$700.  On another issue 2 engines use only marginally more
fuel than one because the controlling factor is delivered HP.  We have twin
Deutz and at 1800 use 2.3-2.5 g/h and Susie Q is fat.

Jim:

I'm running twin Cat 375TA's and pushing a 46', 45000# boat, at about 8
knots. (all +/-)  1200 RPM has been my comfortable cruise as a displacement
hull.
My fuel usage over the past 5000 miles suggests that I'm getting about 2.2
miles per gallon, or just about 4 gallons per hour.
(I subtract .9 gallons per hour for my 8kw WB generator usage)
My WOT is 2400 rpm and I run it up there periodically about every 10 hours
to burn out the carbon.
It's fun to bump her up to 20 miles per hour on the water but I'm hesitant
to check the fuel burn at that cruise speed!

I recalculated using .6 GPH for the genset and came up with 4.25 GPH for the
twin CAT's
....mileage is probably less accurate as I estimate the daily mileage for my
log.
but using the GPH burn rate at 8 knots / 9 mph it's still a respectable 2.1
mpg,
also, maybe adjusting for idle speed and using 8 mph, it  would be 1.9 mpg.
so....Two miles per gallon is a nice round figure!
