Spending bills have passed both chambers

Hi folks,

Just to put a period on this, you’ll be pleased to know that late yesterday afternoon the Senate passed the definitely-not-an-omnibus-because-we-split-it-into-two-parts omnibus spending bill, and presumably have skedaddled out of town after another ho-hum week in our nation’s capital.

Congrats on the WIOA increase and census funding and hopefully some other things I haven’t had a chance to look into. I’ve attached the final version of CEF’s FY 2020 education appropriation table. The only difference between this version and the one I sent earlier is that in this one Sarah has the total for all the Department of Education spending out to the millions and not just hundreds of millions.

One program CEF doesn’t track that I know is relevant to some of you is the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which got an increase of $21 million. The president’s budget proposed eliminating CNCS altogether.

Finally, if only as a reminder that Congress basically crammed a year’s worth of policymaking into one week, a somewhat controversial* tax bill that renews/continues certain deductions was attached to the spending package at the very last minute — There is I assume nothing in there directly related to adult ed, but there may be some college cost deduction stuff that is relevant? Someone here on the list may know. I did see that the excise tax break for craft brewers was extended, which may be important news for some of you…

*Environmental groups (like mine), for example, were upset that certain promised clean energy tax credits were dropped after pressure from the White House.
