Hello,

How does one install CollectionSpace? I click on “Install 4.0” and it takes me to a GitHub page, which I dutifully signed up for, but then nothing else occurred which would lead me to believe that I was downloading collectionspace.

I need this to be up and running asap because the owner of the collection that I must catalog in in the hospital and we need her input.

Thank you, I hope you can reply soon!

Kirsten

Hi Kirsten,

Thank you for your interest in CollectionSpace!

First, if you have any questions at all as to whether
CollectionSpace might be the appropriate software for cataloging this
collection, you're cordially invited to tell us a bit more about the
collection you're cataloging - the types of records you'll have (e.g.
objects, controlled vocabularies, etc.), the numbers of objects in the
collection, and so on.  (And see below for someone with whom you can
talk directly about what you're planning, to find out if
CollectionSpace is an appropriate choice.)

Second, to install CollectionSpace, you can follow the instructions
on either of these pages;

  1. To install CollectionSpace using an automated installer, on a
personal computer or virtual machine running Ubuntu Linux (version
13.10 strongly recommended) or Fedora Linux (version 20 strongly
    recommended):

http://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/UNRELEASED/Automated+installer+for+CollectionSpace+4.1

  1. To install CollectionSpace manually, on a Linux, Windows, or OS X sytem:

http://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/DOC/Installing+CollectionSpace

With both installation methods, you or someone you're working with
will need to be somewhat comfortable working at the operating system's
command prompt: entering a series commands and verifying their output.
(This means, for example, having some familiarity with the 'sudo'
command on Linux and OS X systems.)

Given your time urgency, I'd suggest that you might at least
consider trying the first of the methods above.  The second one
involves a considerable number of manual steps, and can thus be more
time-consuming and subject to error somewhere along the way.

Finally, LYRASIS, a well-known nonprofit organization serving
libraries and cultural heritage organizations is CollectionSpace's new
home.  Via this note, I'm cc'ing Megan Forbes, Community Outreach and
Support Manager at LYRASIS.  You're welcome to contact Megan directly
(as well as to continue to post here on the Talk list) if you have
questions about CollectionSpace, particularly related to the needs of
your collection.

P.S. If possible, could you send me or Megan the URL where you
encountered into the "Install 4.0" button or link that took you
directly to GitHub? We'll be glad to look into that.
