Visitors:
We thank today's observers for their efforts and those interested in the
ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level
of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The
2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe
precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and
involvement.
Weather:
The day started cold (1c) but clear, the temperature rising to 6c mid
afternoon. The wind was light from the north initially, but after a period
of calm late morning switched to the south. Cloud cover was variable
throughout the day, but visibility was good.
Raptor Observations:
A better day today with increased numbers of Red-tailed Hawks (93) and
Red-shouldered Hawks (16). It was good to see 6 Golden Eagles throughout
the day, starting with 3 adults mid morning. A light and dark morph
Rough-legged Hawk passed by, with the latter the last bird of the day.
Turkey Vultures (49) showed up again today. Bald Eagles, Northern Harriers,
Sharp-shinned Hawks and Cooper's Hawks were all in single figures. No
falcons today.
Non-raptor Observations:
Ducks were again the most abundant with Hooded Mergansers (29) and
Buffleheads (30) with the biggest numbers so far this season. A small raft
of Goldeneyes (15) was spotted on the lake. All other duck numbers were
stable, with the exception of Mallards (1120) with the biggest number so
far this season. Two Great Egrets remain on the marsh, but only one Double
Crested Cormorant was present. Songbird and Blackbird numbers were low,
with American Goldfinches (201) the most abundant. The list is at

Predictions:
Tomorrow is forecast to be warmer with moderate winds from the south west.
Unfortunately there may also be showers, which may limit raptor numbers.
