Hi Everyone,

After the first week of December, the 2021-2022 Ontario winter bird
list stands at 184. Last year at this time we had recorded 174
species. I started the list this year by having to add a new species
right away at top of the list: Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, never
recorded before, being seen at Dufferin Islands since August 20, found
by Sid Wood (0/14, zero seen in the last 14 years, Niagara County).
Other rare species include Glaucous-winged Gull (1/14) found by Justin
Peter in Barrie (Simcoe County), Rufous Hummingbird (3/14) first found
by The Patel family in Oakville (Halton County), Razorbill (2/14) at
Niagara-on-the-Lake found by Gina Turone (Niagara County), Say's
Phoebe (0/14) found by Eric Heisey and Brandon Edwards (Ottawa
County), and Blackpoll Warbler (1/14) found by Barb Charlotn in
Sedgewick Forest (Halton county).

As usual after one week there are several holes to be filled in this
winter list. These include Varied Thrush, House Wren, American
Three-toed Woodpecker, and Gyrfalcon. We just need some more effort
and we will pick these up.

With the Christmas Bird Counts starting soon we will hopefully be
filling in some of these gaps. The abnormally warm weather we are
supposed to get might also sweep up some rare birds in the next week.

If you haven't heard, the Ontario Field Ornithologists are running a
Winter Birding Challenge. This challenge involves eBirding
https://ebird.org/ a local area during the winter. More information
about how to get involved can be found here
http://www.ofo.ca/content/winter-birding.

Winter Listers can also keep track of what's being seen in the Ontario
Birds Discord Server which can be found here: Discord
https://discord.gg/jQZtg4CwpR.

The winter list can be viewed at http://tinyurl.com/myyulvs. I try to
update the spreadsheet every couple of days or whenever I hear of a
new addition. I just rearranged the species order to be more in line
with eBird so let me know if I made any mistakes while doing that.
Please let me know if you hear of a new addition or any other
correction to the spreadsheet.

Enjoy the warm weather this weekend,

Todd Hagedorn
