Colleagues,

Most of you are aware by now that COABE has postponed their upcoming conference and  TESOL has cancelled theirs due to COVID-19. I also received a notice today that the Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Education (MCAE) has cancelled their annual NETWORK event.

I know leaders and members of both those organizations are on this list, and I just wanted to write to applaud these organizations for making what I'm sure was a very difficult decision. But it was absolutely the right decision.

Some of you know that my day-to-day job is outside of adult ed, and that I run a group whose members are mainly doctors and and other health professionals. I've been talking to a lot of those folks this week, and over the past 48 hours or so in particular, and they have all impressed upon me just how serious this crisis is.

So I think it's important that we acknowledge these groups for doing the right thing, and to stand with our colleagues during this difficult time.

Jeff

Agreed Jeff, a very hard decision, and I am proud of COABE’s strength and
leadership for doing it.

Jeff, thank you for this.

On behalf of the NCL board of directors, I honor TESOL, COABE, and the numerous other education and language focused organizations that have made the difficult decision to cancel or defer spring conferences and events. Conference planning is a lengthy, complex, and expensive process, as many of you know from personal experience. I encourage each of you to provide whatever support you can to our colleagues as they work through the ramifications of these cancellations.

Good morning all,

On behalf of the COABE Executive Committee, Board, and staff, I want to
express our appreciation for the affirming and kind words regarding this
decision. The decision to postpone the annual Conference not taken lightly
and despite the negative ramifications for COABE, our focus is and remains
on the best interest of the field. We are working with our host hotel,
conference venues, state partner, and speakers/presenters on an alternate
timeframe that we hope to announce within the next week.

We appreciate the support and hope you will be able to join us in Baltimore!
