Hi,
The 2020-2021 Winter Listing season finished on February 28, 2021. This
year there was a total of 217 species reported in Ontario. This species
total is much higher than the 14 year average of 204. The median value is
202 for those 14 years. The 2020-2021 winter bird list season was the 3rd
highest species count in the last 14 years. The first and second highest
years were 2011-2012 with 223, and 2015-2016 with 220. The lowest
was 2009-2010 with 189 species.
Since my last update to Ontbirds on February 2, only one new bird species
was added to the list. This bird was the Spotted Towhee in London, reported
by Brad Carey.
Most of the common birds were seen in the this years winter list with such
a high species count but a few of the uncommon birds that were not seen
include:
Brant, ( 13/14, seen 13 of the last 14 winters);
Blue-headed Vireo (8/14);
Clay-colored Sparrow (4/14);
Vesper Sparrow (12/14);
Eared Grebe (7/14); and
Gray-crowned Rosy Finch (6/14).
A roll call of rare birds seen this year includes:
Scott's Orioles (New! 1/14);
Rock Wren(1/14, but recorded pre-2007, before the Ontario Winter Bird
list);
Laughing Gull (3/14);
Black-headed Grosbeak (1/14, but recorded pre-2007);
Yellow-breasted Chat (2/14);
Glaucous-winged Gull (New! 1/14); and
Black-bellied Plover (1/14, but recorded pre-2007).
The list can be viewed at http://tinyurl.com/myyulvs . As always, please send me an email if you know of a sighting of one of the missing species observed between December 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021, or if you see any errors in the spreadsheet either from this winter or from winters past. Thank you to everyone who has reached out to help correct the list.
Looking forward to spring,
Todd
