ICW trip from Wilmington to Fort Lauderdale

We made the trip in 11 days averaging 65 miles per day. That is a grueling schedule and presumes no nighttime cruising. We stayed in Marinas most nights and anchored a few nights. We ran aground 6 times - three of those hard. Of those three one was result of a mechanical breakdown in the steering system, one navigational error and one silting in the channel. Although we have a 7 foot draft we found that the type of bottom made a huge difference. Our sounder indicated that hard sand could stop us at 6.5 feet but we could pass 5.5 feet in soft mud. Phone based Aquamap was very helpful. This combined with Furuno’s tide graphs indicating tide height above MLW for our location and time were our most useful navigational tools. We found the smaller towns and marinas most appealing. We find the extremely crowded and glitzy South Florida scene  unpleasant. I am not sure how to report the caution areas but will work on that for another post.
