Malcolm,
While everyone is excited about motorsailers could you explain the cost
difference? How much diesel could a fellow buy before the sailing gear and
extra construction costs were met?

I would say that a motorsailer would only be
an economical alternative for folks who are
LONG-range ocean cruisers; usable without
sail rigging on a loop cruise by why spend the
money unless you are going big-time ocean
cruising or living aboard.

Dear Tim,
Very difficult question to answer as it depends very much on the cost of
diesel fuel and how automated you make the rig. I seem to remember [it was a
while ago and I would need to delve into the archives] that the cost of an
automated rig would buy enough diesel to take me around the world at the
costs of that time at a typical cruising sail boat speed. So Mac is right.
from a purely economical point of view you would have to do long distances
to justify the cost of the rig. But you need to keep in mind that for most
sailors it is not the cost that is the driving force to cruising under sail.
Because, if they are honest with themselves, the numbers do not stack up
because harnessing the wind is certainly not free. But there are all the
emotional aspects. Perhaps that is the problem for the motor sailer. It is
neither one thing nor the other and certainly costs more than either. But I
still think it could be one hell of a boat!

Malcolm
