My 1986 heritage east starboard fuel tank leaked out. The inside was full
of rust and oxidation. I've been told of ways to fix this without the need
for tank replacement which is out of the question. I've seen various
sealer chemicals advertised. What options do I have?
Thx Lee
Cleaning the inside of the tank would be a good thing. If you have an
opening you should really give it a cement wash of some sort. Perhaps
you need an opening anyway? To fix the outside I have used 'Leakfix' for
the past 40years mostly on diesel tanks. It is a 2 part epoxy type resin
in a tube or tub. If it can fix diesel tank leaks I would be very
confident with a water tank.

Looks like I got a little confused with my answer. I read that you had a
water tank, so forget about the bit about cement washing. Just use the
Leakfix on the outside of your diesel tank. It really does work
extremely well and I have repaired a diesel tank wth the diesel still
leaking!

Depending on the size of the hole a product called Proseal from Flame master will do the trick. Available at Aircraft spruce and speciality Co.Boeing uses it on aircraft fuel tanks. It is a messy two part sealant but it is a permanent sealant. If the hole is large you could add a piece of steel and bond it in place then glob it all over the repair. It is meant for diesel tanks.
Where did the water intrude the hull, or was it condensation that accumulated in the tank?
