How viable is the use of Volvo IPS units in a powercat? Given that
the forward facing propellors would be protected behind the keels, it
would appear that a common objection to the system, namely its
vulnerability, is mitigated.
I'm very attracted to the control that the joystick affords,
especially in purely sideways movement as in docking. I know that
cats are by nature far more manoeuvrable than monohulls, but the IPS
seems a step up again.
The systems at this point appears to be used principally on planing
vessels. Perhaps the propellor configuration is not (yet) suitable
for displacement hulls.

Since I see that you are in Oz, contact Noosacat in Australia, they put a
pair of these Volvo's on one of their planning Cat's about a year or so
ago!! After the initial PR splash, there has been very little in the news
about it!! Volvo have occasionally used this installation in their ads!!
I don't know of any other Cat yard in OZ following them!! But then it could
just be due to local conditions as the water is pretty thin in many of the
popular boating areas in OZ!! This is why I went to 250 HP Suzuki's on my 40
ft Cougar Cat after owning a Nooscat with Yanmars in it. Second benefit is
that one can keep the props clean by keeping them out of the water when the
boat is not in use.
The boating world needs a light diesel outboard!!
Cheers!

Yanmar has two models of diesel outboards that are not marketed in the Northern hemisphere because of polution requirements. I inquired several years ago as to why they don't attempt to certify them with biodiesel which would likely be clean enough to pass and they were not interested in trying. I very much agree, that diesel out boards would be good.

Yes I am aware of these outboards but the last time I looked at them , the
largest was only 75 HP and VERY heavy for it's power level! There is another
company that makes a diesel outboard pod, essentially a normal engine in a
waterproof pod that is bolted onto the back of the transom, but the prop is
essentially fixed. I think the outfit comes from Florida!! As I recall there
was a Cat used on a movie set in OZ that had these fitted!
The industry needs a breakthrough in engine technology such as perhaps the
proposed Axial Vector Engine which is claimed to have an exceptional power
to weight ratio!!
Maybe the growth of the diesel car in the States will finally drive this
development!
Cheers!

The breakthrough I would think almost has to be a hybrid. Best combination I
can think of right now is electric motors with diesel generator along with
all the solar panels a person can design into a "Globetrotter" type design.
I can also see some kind of Stirling Generator coming into use in the coming
years especially with this new radio wave/burning saltwater discovery. I am
about 8 years away from my Dream boat I keep watching Malcolm's site to
watch for new designs and if and when someone will get serious about the
Globetrotter
Thanks
