Love Me Tonight - One of the Best Musicals Ever Made*
In this lecture, Geoffrey Block, Professor Emeritus of Music History and Humanities at the University of Puget Sound, will discuss Love Me Tonight (1932) and his book on this classical musical film which as published last year as the inaugural volume of Oxford Guides to Film Musicals. The topics will include: 1) the film's genesis and development of the screenplay; 2) the imaginative direction by Rouben Mamoulian, who would soon go on to direct Porgy and Bess, Oklahoma!, and Carousel; 3) the outstanding musical score by the great songwriting team Rodgers and Hart, which includes "Isn't It Romantic?"; 4) the cast of stars, featuring Murice Chevalier, Jeanette Macdonald, and Myrna Loy; 5) the film's battle with censorship and the Hollywood Production Code; and 6) the fil's reception from its time to ours. Throughout his talk, Block will show and discuss film clips from Love Me Tonight that will convey a sense of why this still far-too-little-known movie is frequently praises as "one of the best musicals ever made."
