NORDHAVN INTRODUCES A MOTORSAILER

By the Editors

Nordhavn continues to make waves in the power
cruising world, with its latest tsunami being the
introduction of an elegant motorsailer.

Pacific Asian Enterprises, the company that
launched the Nordhavn line of power passagemakers
15 years ago, was started in 1979 to produce
sailboats, most notably the Mason line of
bluewater yachts. The Nordhavn line has been such
a huge success that PAE now builds Masons only on
special order.

The new motorsailer, a 50-footer displacing
60,000 pounds, will bear the Nordhavn nameplate,
will have transoceanic range under power alone
and should provide solid sailing performance in
offshore conditions.

PAE vice-president Jim Leishman says the old saw
about motorsailers--that they don't motor well or
sail well--is not applicable: "This boat will
motor better than any of our trawlers due to the
efficient hull shape, large fuel capacity,
powerful engine and highly efficient propeller.
She's not designed to go daysailing in light
breezes; however, in 15 to 20 knots of wind in
open ocean, she'll sail quite well."

The two-stateroom motorsailer will feature the
fit and finish Nordhavns are known for and will
include the electrical, mechanical and plumbing
systems developed by PAE during a quarter-century
of experience in offshore conditions.

Here's how PAE describes its newest Nordhavn for
which plans have been in the works for five years:

This rugged 50-footer will displace over 60,000
pounds and carry 750 gallons of fuel. Powered by
the proven Lugger 1066 T diesel engine, a top
cruising speed of 9 knots will be possible. The
rugged Lugger will drive a 30-inch four-bladed
controllable pitch Hundestad propeller and will
offer unparalleled flexibility of operation. When
conditions dictate, the propeller can be fully
feathered to enhance sailing performance.
Alternatively, the engine can be run at very low
rpm and high propeller pitch--combined with the
drive and stabilizing force of the sails--which
together will provide an astounding level of
comfort, economy and capability.

This motorsailer provides a trawler-style aft
deck with a sailing cockpit and steering station
forward of the saloon/wheelhouse. Access to the
forward sailing cockpit is via wide side decks or
from the saloon/wheelhouse. Powered main and
headsail furlers along with power winches will
make sail handling a manageable affair for
shorthanded crews. A 10-foot RIB can be
accommodated athwartships atop the
saloon/wheelhouse roof and a power davit is
standard for launching."

GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS:

LOA: 50 ft
LWL: 46 ft
BEAM: 15 ft 6 in
DRAFT: 6 ft
FUEL: 750 gal
WATER: 250 gal
DISPLACEMENT: 62,180 lb
BALLAST: 15,000 lb
RANGE: 3,000 nm under power only

Construction of the motorsailer will take place
at the South Coast Marine yard in Taiwan with
delivery of the first boat expected in about 16
months. Pricing starts at around $800,000.

WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT THE NEWEST NORDHAVN

Christopher Samuelson owns a Nordhavn 57 with
which he crossed the Atlantic this summer in the
Nordhavn rally. In an earlier life, he was chief
executive officer of the British company that
built Fishers, arguably the most popular
motorsailers ever.

The motorsailer principle is excellent, Samuelson
says, noting that "there is a demand, I have no
doubt, both in North America and Europe."

"This vessel will appeal to year-around sailors
and those who sail in less warm climates, plus we
know that out on the water it gets chilly
anyway," he says.

Samuelson questions the cockpit ahead of the
wheelhouse because of lack of protection from the
weather and recommends an unstayed rig as an
alternative to the conventional version.

"I love it!" says Bill Kimley of Seahorse Marine
in Zhuhai, China, long a champion and builder of
motorsailers. "It's about time somebody started
to publicize the advantages of true motorsailing.
I can't afford to do it."

http://www.seahorseyachts.com/seahorsemarine/seahorsemarine_3.html

"Using the companionway to the forward cabin for
the galley is a great use of space that is
otherwise wasted. The galley should be easy to
use in a seaway as you can brace against the
opposite cabinet," Kimley says.

Coincidentally, the Mandarin 52 motorsailer built
by Seahorse Marine will be on display at Lido
Yacht Expo in Newport Beach, California,
September 30-October 3.

Larry Zeitlin, a longtime owner of a Willard 30
Horizon motorsailer, notes that Nordhavn's
motorsailer hull has some similarities to the
original Nordhavn, the venerable 46.

Jim Leishman responds that the motorsailer is a
"completely new hull, nothing to do with the 46."
He does allow that "years ago we did a number of
46s with a foremast and a complete complement of
sails. The boat would move along OK on a beam
reach or off the wind."

MOTHER OF ALL TRAWLER FESTS NEXT WEEK

The Chesapeake version of West Marine Trawler
Fest, the largest event in the national Trawler
Fest series, returns to Solomons, Maryland,
September 30-October 2 for the ninth annual such
gathering.

Bruce Kessler's television documentary on
Nordhavn Atlantic Rally 2004 will have its
premiere showing as part of the evening program
on September 30. Living the Dream: Small Boats
Crossing The BigOcean depicts the great adventure
in a way that will appeal to all cruisers,
regardless of boat type, size or brand.

In the extensive seminar program, more than half
are new presentations for Solomons, and each time
slot has increased emphasis on women's issues.

About 50 dealer and broker boats for sale and
dozens of private boats are expected at Solomons.
Many of the private vessels participate in
Trawler Crawl when owners open their boats to
registered attendees.

GO TRANSATLANTIC! GO TRANSPACIFIC!

If you're interested in crossing the Atlantic, or
Pacific, you should sign up for entry information
on future transoceanic rallies for ocean-capable
powerboats.

Pacific Asian Enterprises, organizers of Nordhavn
Atlantic Rally 2004, does not plan to host future
transatlantic rallies but a group of trawler
enthusiasts involved in the initial event are
planning to carry on what Nordhavn has pioneered.

"The rally was a huge success, in every respect,"
says Jim Leishman, PAE vice-president. "In time,
we may look at a rally to Southeast Alaska, or
some other trips, perhaps at a lower level of
responsibility and support, but as far as the
Atlantic goes, we'll leave it to others."

NOTEWORTHY

In three short years, the PDQ MV/34 has become
the best-selling cruising power catamaran in
North America. PDQ Yachts in Whitby, Ontario, has
built 50 power cats since the first one was
splashed as a 32-footer in spring 2001. The build
schedule for this year calls for 22 boats to be
launched. PDQ has been building sailing
catamarans since 1987.

A new book, Chesapeake Bay Ports of Call and
Anchorages, has been published by Cruising Guide
Publications. The many ports and anchorages that
have fascinated cruisers for decades are depicted
in full-page, color photos in this coffee-table
style book. Additionally, the new title is
chockfull of useful information, but it is
designed to be used in conjunction with cruising
guides and navigation charts.

And speaking of motorsailers . . . yacht designer
Michael Kasten has been involved in a unique
project and even more unique vessel: Si' Lolona,
a 35-meter (120-foot) Indonesian Pinisi, built in
the traditional way by the Bugis/Konjo
boatbuilders who originate from South Sulawesi.
