11/29 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center. 10am-1PM. High
tide-rising, 36F., sunny.
Some kindergarten classes learning about nature and clouds. Several
visitors enjoying the views.
The center was swamped by approximately 150 (conservative estimate)
European Starlings- in the junipers in the parking lot, in the trees on our
grounds and bathing and drinking in the fountain. I realize they are an
invasive species and are aggressive towards nesting birds, but their
singing/calling was enjoyable . For those who might be interested- the
book Mozart's
Starling (non-fiction) by Lyanda Haupt was very interesting and
informative and gives one a different perspective on starlings.
On the grounds: The starlings, 18 House sparrows in the brush piles, 4
Mourning doves, 10 House finches at the feeders, 5 American Robins, 1
Chickadee, 4 Common Grackles & 1 Cardinal.
On the marsh: 3 Mute swans including one juvenile(still gray), 14 Gadwall,
8 American Wigeons, 6 Buffleheads, 16 American Black ducks, 2 mallards.
