Following Charlie Barnard's posting, here's what I found birding Stratford
today, Jan. 6 (70 species).
Highlights:
-Stratford Marina: 1 Double-crested Cormorant.
-McKinney Refuge (with Carl Ekroth & Paul Desjardins): American Bittern, 4 Swamp
Sparrows.
-Birdseye boat ramp:  1 Black-crowned Night Heron, 19 Am. Coot, 3 Killdeer, 1
Wilson's Snipe.
-Stratford Point (with Twan Leenders, Milan Bull): male EURASIAN WIGEON, 9 Snow
Buntings.
-Raven Pond Park (Rt 110): 3 female Northern Pintail, female Mandarin Duck
(probably same as last winter).
-Long Beach: 1 American Pipit, 1 Ipswich Savannah Sparrow.
-Park Blvd. dune thickets: flock of 60 Common Redpolls. I went back to car for
camera and scope; flock gone upon return.
-Cove Place:  2 female KING EIDERS continue, estimated 10,000 Greater Scaup, 7
Lesser Scaup, 4000 White-winged Scoters, 200 Surf Scoters, 1 Green-winged Teal
(fly by). NOTE: All morning there was a small boat with 2 duck hunters anchored
here; the flock was disturbed and scattered all over the area (and I assume a
few birds in the bottom of their boat). I saw the eiders both at 8:20 and again
at 4:40. I tried to look through the massive scaup flock for things like Tufted
Duck or Redhead. No luck.
-Sikorsky Airport: 1 American Kestrel, 23 Boat-tailed Grackles.

Despite the excellent viewing conditions on the Sound (bright overcast, dead
calm), I failed to find any Razorbills, Red-necked Grebes, Gannets, Common
Eiders, or Black Scoters, but enjoyed the search.
