Sailmail is relitatively cheap, Winlink (Ham) is free and very reliable.  The only problem is that these are both slower than satellite and there is a fairly liberal limit on the size of the messages.

You need the SSB/Ham radio (I carried both) and the 'modum" is less than one boat unit.
