Help choosing DVM

Why would you want to use ANY of those DVMs?  With just a little patience you can buy an 8.5 digit HP3458A on Ebay for under $3000.  It is the best DVM ever produced,  and likely ever will be produced.  The design is over 25 years old,  and is at the limit of what can be achieved by silicon based technology.
For under $200 you can easily score an HP 3457A which is 6.5-7.5 digits.

"It is the best DVM ever produced",

Some might say that the Fluke 8508A and Datron 1271 and 1281 at least give the HP3458A fair competition.

If you are looking at the Keithley DMMs, you might consider the model 2010.  It is as good as the 2001 for DC Volts, but much cheaper.

Thanks for your answer. Let´s divide this in two parts:

  1. Why these are better than the Keithley´s?

  2. Price doesn´t work like that for me.... shipping can easily go
US$200-300, and taxes would make it cost double (and i´ll have a lot of
problems to make it thru customs, even paying the taxes... third world
countries sux). The Keytley´s (and the Rigol) are final prices and no
headaches. Don´t get me wrong, I buy a lot of shit from ebay, but only
fisically small items  OR cheap (most time both).

Thanks

Daniel

I´m not locked to Keithley but it would be much easier to buy these.
Thanks for your idea for the model 2010, i´ll take a look at it.

Thanks very much for your help. The model 2010 costs half than the 2001.
I discovered that I can buy an agilent 34420A for about the same price
than a Keithley 2010. Any hints about that?

Hi,

From my recent experience with Keithley 2000 series DMM's failing routine calibration and requiring expensive "repair" I'd buy the Agilent.

This was some time ago, but I've been away and getting caught up.

Here is nice overview of high end DMM by a Chinese user back
2009.  How he got hold of all of these DMMs is a wonder in itself.

I don't own Keithleys, but their reputation has gone downhill.  They
are about to be or have been, purchased by Danaher, the parent of Fluke.

Some might say that the Fluke 8508A and Datron 1271 and 1281 at
least give the HP3458A fair competition.

If you are looking at the Keithley DMMs, you might consider the
model 2010.  It is as good as the 2001 for DC Volts, but much cheaper.

Thanks for the link. I decided to buy the 2010. Let´s see what happens
(at least it´s new and i´ve bought the extended warranty for 5 years).
I´ll keep the group informed of anything unusual that happens.
