We had the local SeaMech guys come out today to look at
our Naiad stabilizers, and we think we found where the
hydraulic oil is leaking. He made up a couple gaskets
for the valve body, and put some thread tape on a pipe
plug. So far looks good.
We killed two birds with one stone, and used our trip
to the fuel dock as our sea trial for the Naiads! We
paid FJ$1.2845 per liter, plus 12.5% VAT. That comes
out to about US$3.15/USGallon. With any luck at all,
the weather will hold out and we'll be leaving Fiji on
Friday morning. Next stop, Noumea, New Caledonia.
Oh, yeah. We also had a bit of crew drama over the
last few days. One of our crew had taken ill in
Rarotonga, recovered for our trip to Tonga, but then
took ill again. He recovered again in Tonga, but not
before we'd completed departure clearance formalities
with his name removed from the crew list. It was the
weekend, so we couldn't get him added back in.
Seems it was a good thing, since it turns out he has
a serious kidney infection. We finally flew in to
Fiji yesterday and went straight to the hospital.
Once his condition is confirmed, he'll be flying home
to the UK via Wellington, NZ. We're going to make
our next leg (Suva to Noumea) with just the remaining
four crew members (our new skipper Stuart, myself,
Gilbert, and Aussie Pete), but we will pick up one
additional crew for the final leg across the Coral
Sea.
