Re: [PCW] Maine Cat 47 Steps

I could not agree more with George's comments regarding the steps.  The
Maine Cat 47 was one of three boats that I intended to seriously review at
the Miami show, and I was really looking forward to seeing her.
But after climbing those ladder "steps" into the hulls I took it off my
list.  One had better like to climb if you buy this boat.

In addition, the salon was congested and awkward to move around, with too
much furniture for the space, and the fit-n-finish below par compared to
other boats in this price range IMHO.  It was a disappointing visit
because I really wanted to like this boat.  It's good looking and reasonably
priced given the high level of standard equipment.

Kind Regards,
BK

*Lately I have been reading a lot of comments about the Maine Cat 47, so I
went to the Miami boat show to take a good look at this cat.

I must say I never sea trialed the boat but after going inside, I noticed
that for its size I was not so impressed with the interior for the published
price and by the time I went to see the staterooms on the lower floor, I
think the access steps going down have a serious flaw design. They are so
steep that even at the marina one could break a leg doing down to say the
least. I can just imagine what it would be like to go down below in any kind
of seaway as described in the trip back to the Abacos.

Also, there are no gates or protection from falling down the stairways on
both sides of the steering station.
Maybe Maine Cat can redesign this flaw and make it a safer boat?

I have owned several boats including three Catamarans, one of them being a
Catana 44 sailing cat, but I never bought one with steps that are not in the
normal size and elevation.
I have seen these kind of steps on some other designs where the steps looked
like an after thought just to get someone down below but in my opinion very
dangerous.

Buyer beware of bad **step **design . That is my opinion and I felt I had to
say what I found out to this forum.

Cheers,
George*

remember the interior of the boat is on owner's choice.  the P-47 at the miami
boat show was somebody's choice.  if you don't like it have maine cat
construct what you prefer.  that's what we did.  no fuss.  our boat will be
entirely different.

any seaworthy cat in the 45' to 48' range will by necessity have a pronounced
drop from the salon into the hulls, however the stairs are built.  note i said
"seaworthy".  this is because the boat has to have at least 2.5' of water
clearance at it's lowest point if you plan to use it in ocean conditions at
higher than slow trawler speeds.  if you want a dock "condo" this is not
necessary.
