Re: [Talk] CSpace error message

Hi Tyler,

I don't recognize, nor do I know how to help you diagnose and solve,
any of these three errors.  Nor are they, to my knowledge, known
errors.  You can, if you wish, search a list of known issues on the
CollectionSpace issues site:

http://issues.collectionspace.org

Via this note, I'm forwarding your query to the CollectionSpace Talk
list.  Perhaps one of my colleagues on one of the technical teams
might have some suggestions to offer you.

Also, it would be helpful to know what release of CollectionSpace
you installed - 0.8, for instance, or the latest trunk - and any other
potentially pertinent details of your installation.

Finally, as a starting place, it'd be helpful to know if the
services and application layer tests all run successfully.  Running
tests is rather under-documented at the moment, but perhaps we can
help guide you through that process.

Hi Aron,

I'm trying to create a test record in our installation of CSpace, but I'm
running into some mysterious errors that are blocking any forward progress
or evaluation:

(1)
The objects.html page displays this error in the Firefox Error Console, and
does not fully load:

Error: message.fail is not a function
Source File:
http://gw.mediatrope.com/collectionspace/cspace-ui/infusion/CSpaceInfusion.j
s

Viewing the source of the Source File reveals this very odd line of code:
message.fail(); // Intentionally cause a browser error by invoking a
nonexistent function.

(2)
The Safari Activity Window consistently tells me that this request is timing
out:
http://gw.mediatrope.com/collectionspace/chain/object-tab/uispec

(3)
The Safari Activity Window also reveals a "bad gateway" error for anything
in the /chain/intake/autocomplete/ directory (i.e., values that I entered
into fields in an Intake record).

Could these errors be the result of installation errors on our part, or
known bugs in CSpace?

Thanks very much,

Hi Tyler.

It would be useful if you could email the cspace-config.xml file that you
personalised for your installation (you can remove the password
information at the top of the file as I don't need that). as I am seeing
an error in your currency vocab on this page:
http://gw.mediatrope.com/collectionspace/chain/object-tab/uispec
(I admit that isn't the most readable error page)

if I could see the cspace-config.xml file I think I might be able to help
you resolve your issue.

I have been trying to debug a bit but I am having real lag issues
connecting to your server

Could you confirm that you did the version 0.8 post install operations
specified in
http://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/collectionspace/Application+Build?

Then could you connect directly to your service layer through a browser
for me and tell me what is returned on this page
http://192.168.168.51:8180/cspace-services/vocabularies/

it should ask you to login and you can use the standard
test@collectionspace.org login as you do for the UI

Thanks for this.

Chris

We're running v0.8, FYI.

Could these errors be the result of installation errors on our part,

Hi Aron,

We did not run any tests on the services nor the application layer. We're in
the dark on that process. If you could guide us through the process of
running those tests, we would appreciate it.

Thanks much,

We plan to add this documentation to the wiki, hopefully fairly
soon, and will copy this list when that is done.

As a quick starting point, for the services tests, you can try
these steps, which are drawn primarily from the quick installation
instructions at
http://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/collectionspace/Release+0.7+and+0.8+Quick+Installation+Instructions.

These are quickly jotted down from memory and from piecing together
snippets of existing documentation.  I haven't directly experimented
with this specific, somewhat abbreviated sequence of steps, so if you
run into any snags, please feel free to respond to this list and
we'll work with you further:

  1. Get the services source code that matches the release of
the CollectionSpace system that you're running:

    a. Create a new working directory (referred to as {workdir}, below).

    b. Change into that directory ("cd {workdir}")

    c. Check out your release from SVN; e.g. for release 0.8:

svn co
https://source.collectionspace.org/collection-space/src/services/tags/v0.8
.

(Be sure to include the "." at the end of that command.)

  1. In a text editor, open the file

{workdir}/services/client/src/main/resources/collectionspace-client.properties

At the risk of some slight oversimplification, this tells the tests
where to find the services.

You will see this line:

cspace.url=http://localhost:8180/cspace-services/

If your copy of the CollectionSpace services is running on your
local machine, listening on port 8180 (the default setting), you can
leave this alone.

Otherwise, change the hostname and port to point to your copy of
the services, in the format http://{myhost}:{myport}/cspace-services;
e.g. http://myhost.mediatrope.com:8180/cspace-services

  1. In that working directory, build the services layer:

    mvn clean install -DskipTests

This will also build all of the Java classes used by the services tests.

  2. Assuming the build was successful, you can run all of the
    services tests via:

    mvn test

The tests will halt after any module that has test failures.
Otherwise, if the tests run successfully, you'll see a BUILD
SUCCESSFUL message at the end.  The full set of tests generally tends
to take some 10-20 minutes, with some variation depending on your
environment.

To run the tests only for a specific CollectionSpace service,
change to the directory for that service and run 'mvn test'.

For instance, for the 'movement' service:

cd services/movement
mvn test

(2)
The Safari Activity Window consistently tells me that this
request is timing
out:
http://gw.mediatrope.com/collectionspace/chain/object-tab/uispec

(3)
The Safari Activity Window also reveals a "bad gateway" error for anything
in the /chain/intake/autocomplete/ directory (i.e., values that I entered
into fields in an Intake record).

Could these errors be the result of installation errors on our part, or
known bugs in CSpace?

Thanks very much,
.t
