The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is an annual, citizen-science bird census
organized by the National Audubon Society that takes place between December
14 and January 5. Volunteers count all the birds they can find and hear
within a specific 15-mile diameter circle on one day, with the data used to
monitor bird populations, understand their health, and guide conservation
efforts. It is the longest-running citizen science survey in the world,
with origins dating back to 1900.
If you have never participated in one before, this may be the year to give
it a try. Contact the compiler of a location near you to see if they are
taking new observers, in the field or at a feeder.
