Marin, I did not read your reply on the rotten planks to be replaced. On the
contrary there were about 4 boards that were some what soft that I did
replace. I cut a hole in the bottom of the boat about 5ft.x 8ft. and dropped
the old tanks out as well as the generator. I was concerned about cutting
the main stringers out and having the boat rack. With good bracing we were
able to take out both tanks in less than a day. All turned out well, the
boat did not have any racking. When cutting out the bottom I had a very big
advantage in seeing what kind of condition the stringers were in. I could
not believe that they were like the day they were installed. I lifted the
starboard and the port new tanks back into place and resistered the original
stringers in place. This went very quick! Through some research I found out
if you sister the stringers with =" marine plywood and epoxy back into place
it would make the new stringer at least half again as strong as the
original.
I believe that most yards do not do this because it is labor intensive. I
had an estimate to do the work by a company and it was over $220K for just
the cold molding and replacing the decks. I have about $35K into both the
bottom cold mold tanks, and the decks with my free labor. I replaced the
old teak decks with =" marine plywood and I am so glad that I did. When the
old deck came up many of the supports had cracks in them. We were able to
sister any support that any signs of stress lay the new plywood down and
epoxy 2 layers of 1708 over them. We then fared out the decks and put a non
skip (glass beads) over the fiberglass. I am really happy with the way decks
turned out!
I think the most work came when I tore off the old anchor and winch and
redesigned the bow pulpit and added a Samson post. This ended up being
difficult. I put a lewmar over sized vertical wind less and re-bent all of
the railing around the bow. It works super but that was a lot of work - very
time consuming!!
Can you send any pictures with comments? I would like to see any projects
similar.
