Visitors:
Thanks to Chris B for going down to do today's count despite the not so
great weather.
Weather:
Temps ranged from -2C to 0C. The wind was a moderate WNW to NW (around 25
km/h) with occasional gusts. Cloud cover was 100% throughout, and snow
flurries were sometimes light but never absent.
Raptor Observations:
The promising wind unfortunately brought lake effect precipitation to the
area at least several kms around Hawk Cliff. Consequently, despite
brighter, drier conditions to the east that produced an adult Golden Eagle
just west of Delhi, the Cliff itself yielded a mere 7 raptors.
Non-raptor Observations:
Non-raptors included: Herring Gull, Canada Goose, American Crow, Blue Jay,
European Starling, Cedar Waxwing, White-throated Sparrow, Song Sparrow,
American Tree Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Golden-crowned Kinglet,
Black-capped Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, Downy Woodpecker,
Red-bellied Woodpecker, American Robin, American Pipit, Horned Lark,
Eastern Bluebird, American Goldfinch, Northern Cardinal, and Rusty
Blackbird (4).
Predictions:
Tomorrow is forecast to have W winds which will likely slow down any flight
but Sunday and Monday the forecast is calling for NE and NW winds BUT with
some snow so what birds do decide to move should be down along the
lakeshore. I'm just not sure how many raptors are "in the pipe".
