Tsunami alerts

Mike (& Willy),

Don't get me wrong. I am not in any way suggesting that a centralized
tsunami alert system is a bad thing. Clearly, an effectively
implemented system could save lives, even if it only gets used twice
a century. And as a former doctoral candidate in geology I understand
the causative effects, mechanisms, results and statistical
probabilities.

On this forum there are a number of individuals who are planning some
long distance passagemaking. Many of them are here to learn what they
can and rarely contribute rather than to ask a question. Some private
e-mails I have received would indicate that the subject of
passagemaking is fairly intimidating and some of them have a host of
concerns and  trepidations. One of their reactions to your post was,
"The complexities of doing this and understanding all of the possible
problems are bad enough and now I need to worry about a tsunami
warning communications protocol?"

I don't think they do.

I don't think one needs to loose sleep over the next event. But being
educated and taking proper precautions would seem prudent. Discussing that
eventuality should not hurt but dismissing it might. I know receding water
is a good indication of a coming tsunami learned from the experience of
others in the 64 event. That's education that I would never have discussed
in this forum had an event not happened. I think all the information is good
so thanks Bruce and Mike for opening up the discussion. The gain in simply
being aware is great.
