Question about OAI-PMH

Hi all,

An enquiry came over the code4lib list today asking about open source systems for cultural objects and OAI/PMH harvesting.  See my reply to the list.  Has anyone in the CSpace community built out OAI/PMH harvesting?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi all,

We’ve implemented CollectionSpace (main site http://www.collectionspace.org/ and project wiki https://wiki.collectionspace.org/) for five collections http://research-it.berkeley.edu/services/collectionspace-campus-museums here at UC Berkeley and have built out integrations and data portals of various kinds.  We haven’t done anything specific with OAI/PMH harvesting, but CollectionSpace is certainly flexible enough to add this capability.

I’ll ask the CollectionSpace community if anyone has done this and will report back.

Regards,
Chris

Dear All

We are in need of a software system that can send data through OAI/PMH
protocol to Discovery system. We are using Koha as ILS, DSpace as
repository system (IDR) and VuFind as Discovery layer. The discovery layer
harvests data from ILS and IDR through OAI/PMH. We need an open source
software that can fit into this system to handle non-bibliographic domain
like museum objects, heritage objects, cultural objects. Could you please
guide me in shortlisting a set of open source software with following
features:

  1. the software must belong to the domain of cultural objects and must be
able to handle Cultural objects. Heritage objects, Museum objects etc with
    media handling capabilities;

  2. the software must support one/some of the global domain-specific
    metadata schema like CDWA, CDWA-Lite, CCO, VRA Core, LIDO;

  3. the software must be able to expose data over OAI/PMH (necessary XSLT
may be developed at VuFind end).

Please help.

Thanks and regards

Thanks Chris. I already enquired about this to collectionspace community
through 'contact us' facility. The response that I've received is as
follows:

Hello,

Your message was forwarded to me by the CollectionSpace home. Apologies for
the delay in my response.

The CollectionSpace schema is based on Spectrum
http://www.collectionstrust.org.uk/spectrum, the UK museum collection
standard
http://www.collectionstrust.org.uk/collections-link/collections-management/spectrum/the-spectrum-standard.
At this time, OAI harvesting is a feature the application does not support,
but could be developed in the future. As I’m sure you know, CollectionSpace
is open-source, so if organizations wanted to enhance features of the
platform, and contribute their developments back to the community, we
certainly welcome this.

I hope this satisfies your questions. If not, please feel free to reach out
to me.

All best,

Madeline

It seems that OAI-Compliance is yet to achieve but as you know it requires
if we want to integrate LAM - Libraries, Archives and Museums.

Thanks for that information.  I thought I’d heard that one implementer (SMK?) had done something like this as an extension.
