Claims of PV efficiency over ~14% are strictly research experiments not
commercial devices. They usually involve focussed light and very high
temperature. Maybe someday this will work but not now.
Last year I mistakenly left opened previously jars of mustard, ketchup, and
peanut butter on board when I left Puffin for her nine month's rest,
September to May. When I arrived nine months later those products had not
changed in taste as far as I could tell. An opened jar of marmalade had a
layer of mold on the surface but after removing it, the jam was fine.
I have wished for many years that the EPA , the FDA or DOE would ban the
labels about refrigeration on food that does not require it. Given our
litigious culture and the do-nothing congress this is not likely to happen.
It would not be difficult to estimate the contribution to atmospheric CO2
that this mislabeling causes.

I find it ironic that although boating was originally intended to
"get away from it all" so many people insist on bring so many hide
bound practices with them.
And even more sadly they no longer think for themselves. They follow
along without question. It was printed or seen on TV so it must be
true. Duh!
Richard you are right. Many condiments are either pickled or consist
of natural preservative that cannot spoil. Relish is a pickled
product. Vinegar was originally used as a preservative and so on.
I have even read account where fallen sailors or soldies of
significant rank were placed in vinegar or vine barrels to preserve
the body for return to the family for burial.
Speaking of slightly mouldy marmalade or jam. One time I found a one
pound jar almost full but with a slight skin of mold on the top.
Although the instinctive reaction was to toss it instead I masde
some excellent vine. It tested 19% alcohol thanks largely to high
sugar content and had a fruity sherry flavor. Time to repeat that
experiment.
