NO STANDARD IN ANY INDUSTRY is the "end-all" of safety or security.  Standards ARE NOT about making things work properly in their intended application.  Standards are the MINIMUM starting point.  You should think of this as, if you do not meet the criteria of the standards, you are BELOW MINIMUM.  Standards are about preventing/limiting financial loss, mechanical damage, fire, injury and death WHEN COMPONENTS FAIL or are misused due to human error in a system, as they inevitably will in any/all mechanical systems.
