Rule BP switches

While  I have heard the Rule switches are terrible, that has not been our
experience.  11 years full time live aboard.  We still have the OEM bilge
pump.  We did have to replace the switch 1 time.  We do have a bilge pump
counter which does help us monitor the bilge.  . So far, the only times the
bilge pump has cycled we have been able to  confirm that the AC condensate
drains are the source, or the shower sump has overflowed, and on a couple
of occasions we found there were leaks in the fresh water system.  We
shower aboard every day for 11 years.  We have replaced the shower sump
pump 3 times and the shower float 4 times.  There are several better
switches available as several have mentioned.  We stick with the Rule
because ours are plug and play.  For those of you who are having trouble
with the Rule pumps and switches, do you have any idea how often the pump
is cycling?
Cheers,
Tom

Also 11 years full time live-aboard, will pass on our experience:

Shower sump:  Often.  Aft lazarette, not so much until the rains come (60 YR
wooden boat, drop boards, etc..)

As someone mentioned, I suspect the 'issues' started around the time of the
shift away from mercury based switches.  I know the original pump switched
lasted a LONG time, it was only when I had to put in a replacement in say
the past 5-6 years that those seems to have a short life.

When looking for automatic pump switches, I've always noted at least two
different amp specs. Might the lower amp rated switch, if used with a
higher amp draw pump be a reason for some of the failures?

Good point. I've also noticed that too.  But never really thought about
it.  .  The pump I have the more frequent issues with is a little  500 gph
shower sump pump.  Would not think the lower amp switch would have trouble
there but I will check into that  the next time I buy switches.
Cheers,
Tom
