Talk list-ers, please see the below query that came in via the website:

Name: Tracy Tucker
E-mail: ttucker@willacather.org
Subject: Installation options

Question or comment:

Does this HAVE to be installed on a server, or is there a way to do a local
installation? I am the only archivist in our organization, and though we
might sometime have more staff and need to expand, right now I am the only
person who will be utilizing the collections software. We have no IT
department anyway, nor a server.

If it absolutely MUST be put on a server, can you direct me to the EASIEST
way to install it on a virtual server? Keep in mind I read the instructions
and it means nothing to me. I love your collections software, but I have
absolutely no idea how to make it work for me.

Help??

Tracy

Tracy,

Thanks for getting in touch!

The short answer to your question is that yes, you can do a local installation of CollectionSpace; however, the installation instructions are more or less the same whether you're installing on a desktop, laptop, server, virtual server, etc.

There's a list on our website of the technical skills required to successfully download, install, and configure CollectionSpace: http://www.collectionspace.org/faq/#skills. If this list is not in your skillset, then you'll need to get some help.

I'll touch base offline to provide some options. The program team is available to work with you, as is a growing network of service providers that specialize in a variety of services including implementation planning, data mapping and migration, and installation, configuration, and hosting.

Best regards,
Megan

As a direct answer to your question, it is possible to have this software on a local installation, but it won't be straight forward (the details are at http://wiki.collectionspace.org/x/AgMpCQ).  The simplest way to install the software is to use the automated installer (http://wiki.collectionspace.org/x/vgIpCQ) but even that is not nearly as easy as, say, installing a Windows application.

LYRASIS is building a hosting service for CollectionSpace with an anticipated start date in January.  We are finalizing the service and pricing details now, and if you are interested in hearing more about the service as it becomes available please e-mail Patty Wanninger at patricia.wanninger@lyrasis.org.

Okay, that answers my question. I wish I had the time to learn to do my own
IT work, but I don't see that in my future.
