Tracy, Thanks for getting in touch! The short answer to your question is that yes, you can do a local installation of CollectionSpace; however, the installation instructions are more or less the same whether you're installing on a desktop, laptop, server, virtual server, etc. There's a list on our website of the technical skills required to successfully download, install, and configure CollectionSpace: http://www.collectionspace.org/faq/#skills. If this list is not in your skillset, then you'll need to get some help. I'll touch base offline to provide some options. As a direct answer to your question, it is possible to have this software on a local installation, but it won't be straight forward (the details are at http://wiki.collectionspace.org/x/AgMpCQ). The simplest way to install the software is to use the automated installer (http://wiki.collectionspace.org/x/vgIpCQ) but even that is not nearly as easy as, say, installing a Windows application. LYRASIS is building a hosting service for CollectionSpace with an anticipated start date in January.
