Quoting from the report: "Considering the owner’s firsthand account and where he first saw flames, it is likely that the fire originated in the bulkhead between the vessel’s electrical panel and storage closet."  That is exactly the configuration of our boat, and many, many others.

I strongly recommend and urge that ALL BOAT OWNERS install smoke alarms INSIDE the electrical closet(s), on the overhead of the area where the electrical panel is located.  This smoke alarm should be the type that detects both incipient AND flame fires.  Detected at the incipient stage, a fire can be entirely avoided.  Detected at the smoke stage, it may still be possible to save the boat.

Most boat electrical panels are located in closed closets.  If a fire gets started in that space, it would be "out of control" by the time the owner became aware of it.
