Hello all:
Palmetto Moon with Jim, Su, and lazy cat Alex are in SC at Marina Grande
Dunes (MM- 357) for the Summer.
Long story short; Su needs to have some dental work.
Dr. said would take 8 -12 weeks for procedures & follow-ups.
Often times the medical profession estimates time similar to boat yards,
it's the time you want to hear.
So we decided to bag this Summer cruising and not jeopardize our 'Fall
Migration' South.
With idle time to achieve (hopefully) big, little, nice to-do, Admiral
ordered, projects.
My first is to make-up a 30 amp /250 v male twist lock plug with a female 15
or 20 amp straight plug for extension cords.
Purchase in marine stores or catalog 45.00 - 75.00, big box stores in pieces
21.50.
Question: which wire (green ,black, white) from female straight plug goes to
30 amp twist lock spades?
This set up will only be used for heat gun, drills, buffers, and extended
vacuuming, to keep big amp draw off boat wiring.
Thanks in advance

The green wire goes to the green screw (safety ground)
The white wire goes to the silver screw (neutral)
The black wire goes to the brass screw (hot)
This applies to both plugs (and any other 120V AC plug, in North America)
A helpful hint: the cable has male and female ends - if you try to put
the male cable end on a female connector, or vice versa, the wires won't
fit nicely.
With all due respect, if you have to ask this question, I suggest you
consult someone more familiar with AC wiring practices for assistance -
this IS NOT something you want to get wrong!

A few comments on this:
Technically, what you are doing in not necessarily the best of ideas.
The problem is that the 30A outlet is protected with a 30A breaker, and
that in turn is predicated on you plugging in equipment which will handle
30 amps. If you were to plug in something like a vac and a heat gun at the
same time, your cord (which is only capable of carrying 15 amps) would turn
into melted copper, but the 30A breaker would not trip.
What you really should do is to run the 30A plug and #10 cable into a
small breaker panel, and from that run a couple of outlets. However, this
is pretty bulky and a pain to store.
Here's my solution, which is fast, cheap and safe: Buy a good power bar,
with a built-in 15A breaker (this should run you about $25 at Home
Desperate or Lowes). Cut off the plug. Attach a 30A twist-lock plug. You
now have multiple, overload-protected straight blade outlets that you can
power from any 30A twist-lock outlet.
By the way, in answer to your question: If you look carefully, you will see
that the three screws on both the plugs and sockets are silver, bronze and
green. The white wire goes to the silver screw, the black wire goes to the
bronze screw, the green or bare wire goes to the green screw.
