Your feedback is invited regarding the following enhancements,
proposed for CollectionSpace 3.2.3, to the 'search as you type'
behavior for authority terms, in autocomplete fields:

Proposed autocomplete enhancements for Release 3.2.3
http://wiki.collectionspace.org/x/GQCKBw

The two proposed enhancements, shown in wireframes there, are:

  • internal wildcards, which match zero or more characters within
    your search expression
  • anchor characters, to tie matches to the beginning and/or end of
    your search expression

This behavior is in place on QA (in both the core and lifesci
tenants), if you would like to try it out "live".  There are some
sample records in the lifesci tenant that you can use:

http://qa.collectionspace.org:8180/collectionspace/ui/lifesci/html/index.html

For instance, try:

  • On a Loan Out record, entering "norris" into the Lender field (or
any autocomplete field that lets you search Person records)

  • On a Cataloging record, entering "rhodo" into the (unfortunately
    narrow) Determination History->Name field

You can post your reactions, questions or concerns to the Talk list.
Your responses are cordially requested by end of day Wednesday, May
    22, 2013.

Thank you,

Thanks, Aron, and others at Berkeley for working on this contribution.  I'd like to give some background.  Here at Berkeley, we have now migrated three collections into CollectionSpace.  The Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology (PAHMA) and the University and Jepson Herbaria (UCJEPS) went live last summer, and we just completed the migration for the UC Botanical Garden (UCBG) at the end of this past April.  (Hooray!)

All three deployments have very large vocabularies in the person and organization authorities, and two (UCJEPS and UCBG) have very large vocabularies in the scientific taxonomy authority.  The data imported from their legacy systems was not particularly clean, but even if it were clean, the number of terms that match frequently used strings has made it challenging for museum staff to find the correct term.  For example, the string "Rhododendron" occurs in the taxonomy vocabulary for the UC Botanical Garden more than 400 times.  Aron Roberts, Rick Jaffe, and others worked with our community to identify an approach that we believe will help make it easier for people to find terms in large vocabularies WITHOUT sacrificing the general usefulness of the 'search as you type' functionality in the term-completion widget.  We are hoping that the larger CollectionSpace community can help verify this approach.

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments.

Thanks,
